The fluid, all pervasive element of water is the one most associated with psychic ability in astrology. The zodiac is divided into 12 signs, and each sign is related to one of the four elements of fire, earth, air and water. Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are assigned to the fire element; Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn to the earth element; and Gemini, Libra and Aquarius to the air element.
That leaves Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces assigned to the element of water, and these signs are generally thought to have considerable psychic ability, especially Pisces, the 12th sign of the zodiac. If you have the a planet in these signs, you will be most likely express your psychic ability in the areas controlled by these planets. For example, the Sun in Pisces may lead you to a career in astrology or tarot, while Venus in Pisces may help you express your psychic abilities in relationships and love.
To have the Moon in any of these signs practically ensures prophetic dreams and visions, since the Moon is concerned with the deeper recesses of the psyche. But what makes these signs so “out of this world” in nature? Certainly the element of water is a strong factor. Water is the element of emotions and memories, both of the past and future. The human body is 75 per cent water, and all life began in the oceans – so water is part of our being, our past and our future. Being born in a water sign gives a unique perception of the connected nature of all things.
But the three different signs express their psychic abilities in different ways. Cancer, ruled by the Moon, is subject to the ebb and flow of the tides, and the passage of the Moon from dark to full though the signs. Cancerians are very attached to home and family, and may exhibit a psychic connection to their nearest and dearest. They are also likely to be influenced by past life memories, and early childhood experiences which heighten their psychic senses. If the Moon is in Cancer, all senses are heightened, and the psychic abilities can go far beyond a connection to close family.
Scorpio is the embodiment of the saying ‘still waters run deep’. Like an iceberg, much of their character is below the surface, but those deeper layers also hide sharp perceptions and psychic ability. Scorpios have ‘hunches’ and ‘gut feelings’ which are uncannily accurate. Ruled by enigmatic Pluto, the Scorpio person knows when things are about to profoundly change. If the Sun is in Scorpio, the person can often be drawn to a career in the psychic realm, and become a channel or medium.
Pisces is ruled by Neptune, so the connection with the ocean is very strong. Pisceans are often highly psychic but it is not as clearly defined as with the other two signs. Dreams and visions are the realm of Piscean prophecy, and both are very vivid and lifelike to the person born under this sign. Pisceans are often drawn to the arts, and their paintings and writing have a touch of prophecy about them. Almost any planet in Pisces will have some effect on the person, regardless of their actual sun sign.
The balance of water in the natal horoscope must be weighed against other factors if psychic ability is not evident. A lot of earth, for example, can ‘ground’ the person and make them less susceptible to psychic influences, while a lot of air can make them more skeptical and questioning. Fire and water do not mix well, and if there is more fire than water, then the water element will simply evaporate.
Discovering your own psychic ability can be a fascinating study. You can have a chart created for free on many astrological websites, which will help you determine the strength of any planets in water signs in your charts. But even if you don’t have any planets in water signs, you can still locate the source of those hunches and ‘lucky guesses’ that may make you seem psychic at times. Look for the rulers of those water signs in your chart. For example, if you have Pisces directly overhead in your chart, and Neptune in the Sixth House, that will show a connection with the psychic realm through your career goals. Maybe it won’t manifest exactly as mediumship, but you could make a success of running a new age bookshop.
Having Cancer on the Fourth House and the Moon in the Fifth House can make you one of those parents who always knows when something is not right with the kids, while having Scorpio on the 12th House and Pluto in the Eighth House can give you very deep insights into spirituality and death.
A natal horoscope is a complex combination of signs, planets, houses and elements. The element of water is always present, and knowing what it means in your chart can give you a profoundly deep understanding of your own nature, and your psychic abilities.
