The term Soulmates may mean different things to different people. These are the souls you have encountered in the past, or in your present lifetime. This is a term used to define those who have a mutual feeling of deep and natural affinity, of friendship, love, intimacy, sexuality, as well as compatibility. Based on the concept of reincarnation and karma, certain cultures and religions, spiritually believe that soulmates have spent several lifetimes together. According to the ancient Hindu philosophy married couples remain together for seven lifetimes.

Defining Soulmates

There are various definitions of Soulmates:

• Classical – As per the Greek Mythology, originally humans had 4 hands, 4 legs, a single head with two faces, and Zeus, fearing their power, split them into two, condemning them into searching their other half through eternity. This theory was presented by Aristophanes in Plato’s Symposium. In the classical sense, soulmates are those who are condemned to look for each other endlessly.
• Companion Soulmates – These are people who have made a connection with each other.
• Twin Soulmates or Twin Flame Soulmates – These are thought to be the ultimate soulmates, the one and only other half of one’s soul. These are the souls driven to find and join one another.
• Scientific Soulmates – They are the people who are absolutely happy with each other. All other persons in existence would make you less happy.

Soulmates – The New Age Concept

A prevalent concept in the New Age movement is that certain souls are literally made for each other. They are fated to be the mates of each other, or play certain important roles in each other’s lives. These souls are known to have a connection in the past, and are reconnecting in the present life, as well.

According to this concept, one can have a number of soulmates. How does one explain meeting another person in this life and instantly hating or loving them? This is because of interactions and relations in the previous lifetime, or several previous lifetimes.

The Karma Theory

People feel closer to certain people. They could be in their biological family, adopted family, or pseudo family. Every one of them could be a soulmate. Karma is the responsibilities that soulmates share between themselves. Soulmates come together and bring another soul into the physical realms – based on karma.

The karma connection in the family could be between a mother and her child. In such a case the child remains with the mother, exclusively. If the karma connection happens between the father and the child, the mother then leaves, or dies. There could be a soulmate connection with both the parents, as well as with siblings.

Similarly, soulmates could be friends, co-workers, or anyone else who influences one’s life in any way.

The Eternal Search

As per this concept, many soulmates are destined to search their counterparts eternally – not because they are unable to meet, but because they are unable to accept each other. This is the soulmate emotional destruction concept, where the soulmates possess the ability to inflict serious emotional injury to each other. Due to the severe adverse emotional impact, the separation of the idealized love between the soulmates is destined to remain.
