The Devil Tarot Card
The basic symbols of this card are a winged and horned devil on a black pedestal, a naked male and female figure, chains, and an inverted pentagram. This card is about ambitions and is also synonymous with temptation and addiction. This card symbolizes downfall, unexpected failure, controversy, violence, disaster, an ill-tempered person, and weird or strange experience; and in reverse stands for release, overcoming handicaps, divorce, and enlightenment.

As the Fool further progresses on his journey, he comes to a mountain where a ‘Devil’ reigns. He sees naked people linked to the pedestal by chains. These people are engaged in all unimaginable base things - lust, passion, obsession, and greed. These feelings too rise in the Fool as he approaches, but he shouts at the Devil that he will not give in, he will not be enslaved like others. On being urged by the Devil, the Fool notices that the chains are wide enough for the people to slip through – if they wanted to!

The Fool realizes that excesses can inhibit one from following to the highest heights.

For the Querent, this card warns him not to be too restrained, but to be passionate and ambitious. You are restrained because you allow yourself to be.
